Easiest Design Transfer Method You’ll Ever Find

I am not an artist, and I can’t draw or paint, and believe me, I have tried.  I was playing with pickets from my friends old fence and wanted to draw the word “welcome” on it.  I don’t like the look of decals, so what to do?  I found this tutorial on Pinterest, so I thought I would give it a try.  I printed out my welcome design and taped it to my assembled pickets with a layer of heavy newsprint under it.  I used a pencil and went over the outline of my design.  I was afraid to lift up the paper and see my disaster, but it really worked !!  I then took a fine paint brush and a little black paint, and painted in the lines.

I have to admit, I didn’t think it would work, especially on rough painted wood, but it did.  I would do one thing differently,  I  think my design was too small for the sign, but I can always add more to it  Next time 🙂

Here is my question to all of you, what is your favorite way to transfer onto painted wood?

Picket Fence decorations, pt 1

I was given a large white picket fence the other day and it has been raining for 2 days, making it impossible to create what I wanted.  I did manage to dry a few pickets inside, so I thought I would try to make a few things from my Pinterest “to try” board.  A few months ago, my dollar store had drawer handles 2/1.00, and I just couldn’t resist buying a few dozen.  I knew I would use them someday, and today was the day.  I took one of the pickets and put a fresh white wash on it and added several knobs,  to create a coat rack out of it.  I was happy with the results 🙂

I really thought I did a better job of centering, but after looking at the picture, lol, guess not.

I collect silver and silverplate, I love making jewelry and wind chimes with them, so I bent a few spoons and put a tea light candle on each spoon.  I also added a fresh white wash on the picket and I really like the way this came out.  I will definitely make more of these !!  7/27/12 update…..hot glue didn’t  hold the spoons on the board, will try a different adhesive tomorrow.

Hopefully more of the fence will be dried out tomorrow and I can try making a shelf or bench.  Until then, I am attempting to make sheet covered hangers I saw on Pinterest the other day, I thought they looked really cute and would fit in with my decor 🙂

Calling all creative people !!

Whitewashed picket fences conjure up images of quaint country homes and idyllic cottages, but what happens when the fence has seen it’s last day?  My bff just put in a new fence and was making arrangements to have the old fence taken to the dump.  DUMP ??  I don’t think so..  I went over tonight, cordless saw in hand and managed to put almost all of the fencing in the back of the truck.  I am so excited, I doubt I will sleep at all tonight.  I have visions of picket flags, chairs, a little shelf, a destination sign, just to name a few.

Here is where all of you crafty and handy people come in !!  Let me know what you would do with an old picket fence and if you have pictures of projects you have completed, please share.
